Anxiety is caused by your thoughts. It’s an interesting conundrum that your mind controls your brain, and your brain controls your mind. Still, it comes down to you having a choice and control over your own mind and thoughts. The most common way people give themselves anxiety (yes, you give it to yourself, it doesn’t just happen outside of your control) is by focusing on the thought “what if?”. What if I get into a car accident, what if I don’t do well on this test, what if I oversleep, what if I get fired, what if I lose my house, what if my teenager… You get the idea. Most of the time, your worries never happen, and even if they do happen, worrying ahead of time won’t prevent them, or make the situation better. Since you are able to talk yourself into these anxiety producing thoughts, you are also able to talk yourself out of them. Pay attention to what you tell yourself. On a scale of 1 to 10, with one being not important, and ten being somebody died, rate your anxiety producing thoughts. Stop and consider if your number is accurate, and what you can do to reduce the number. Remember, you can control your anxiety, or you can let it control you. The choice is yours.
